Is SMS Marketing The New Email Marketing?

May 21, 2021

Businesses are looking for more ways to connect with their consumers and convey important messages. Email marketing has proven to be a reliable, if not necessary, marketing strategy; but now businesses are beginning to realize the increased benefits of incorporating SMS marketing to reach their customers.

SMS marketing allows businesses to communicate with their customers faster and align with their consumer’s natural behaviors. This marketing tool provides businesses the opportunity to reach a wide range of ages, especially millennials. Mobile phones and texting are a part of daily life, and with the majority of the population having a smartphone, “people pick up their phones on average 58 times per day”

People’s phones are often an extension of their being. Notifications naturally prompt people to react. When people receive a text message, their immediate reaction is to open it, more so than an email. SMS messages have an average opening rate of 98%, while email lives typically around a 20% open rate. Simply, people open text messages faster than email, making SMS marketing a quicker way to reach customers.

Although SMS marketing has a more prosperous and rapid opening rate than email, the two strategies are complementary and should be used in sync. SMS marketing integrates seamlessly into other marketing channels to support as a booster for different strategies in a business marketing plan. Email marketing contains essential information such as branding, promotions, visuals, updates, and more. SMS messages are a shorter and more concise version. As we know, customers will most likely see a SMS message before an email, but the two work together to convey the bigger message. Businesses have expressed they “look at email as the news story and SMS as the news bulletin, the headline”.

Businesses have the opportunity to create a personalized experience and more engagement for customers with SMS messaging. Allowing customers to be in the know in real-time can strengthen the relationship between the business and the customer. Customers like to feel connected and up-to-date with everything that is happening with a brand they are invested in. Adding touches like personalizing a customer’s name in the message, notifying when a package has been shipped or delivered, a product restock notification, can go a long way and make any customer feel important. According to a Yotpo consumer survey, “over 54% of consumers are more likely to make a purchase if the messages they have received are personalized”.
